Sylvia Mitchell Violin
Sylvia Mitchell violin player for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra since 1983, grew up in Washington and Utah. But she has worked as a musician and teacher in as many places as Alaska, California, Oregon, and Canada.
Graduate of the University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music, Mitchell took violin lessons from renowned teachers like Jens Ellerman, Dorothy Delay, Walter Levin, and Isadore Tinkleman. She also spent four summers at the Aspen Music Festival as an orchestral fellow and participated in the violin pedagogy workshops with Samuel Applebaum at the University of Utah.
Mitchell later went on to perform the role as concertmaster for the Saskatoon Symphony in Saskatchewan, Canada. She finally became a member of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, as a first violin, and has performed in the CSO Chamber Series and the Linton Series. She is known to experiment with more contemporary styles of violin performance and her virtuoso can be heard on more than one CD.
For Sylvia Mitchell violin performance now appears to be the focus of her career. The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is the fifth-oldest orchestra in the nation and with Mitchell on board, it continues to secure the legacy of featuring fine musicians.
